For the 5th year in a row (Aug. 2017 to Aug. 2022) Utah has ranked in last place for women's equality. This disappointing rating is largely due to a lack of female leadership throughout the state. The LeadHERship Project aims to encourage girls and women to take on leadership in their communities and careers.
I believe that great leaders are also great servants. During my time when I worked to reform title nine practices in Utah I saw first-hand how crucial it is to have leadership that is willing to serve. After two years of advocating for sexual assault (Title IX) policy changes at my university three women from the Department of Justice visited me and heard my requests. Within one week of their arrival every change my colleagues and I requested had been made. Those three women were great leaders because they were great servants first.
In a series published by the Utah Women in Leadership Project titled, "What Can I Do?" Dr. Susan R. Madsen discusses tangible methods that everyday Utahns can implement to help our state rise up the ranks of the women's equality charts. One of those items is connecting girls and young women to real role models and mentors. I am working to feature local women leaders on the Orem City social media accounts, the Miss Orem social media accounts, and The Grit Girl Group social media accounts to show how many incredible role models Utah has to offer. I also host networking nights where women can come and meet those leaders in person and hear them share their successes, failures, and other life-lessons.
Did you know that Utah has over 170 women's groups and resources? If you answered no, you're not alone. There are so many wonderful free classes, coaches, tools, and resources at the disposal of Utah women that are waiting to be utilized. I want to help spread the word and make sure these great organizations are being put to good use!
I love visiting the classrooms of Orem schools, youth groups, and other speaking engagement opportunities where I get to teach about leadership development. Knowing that I could be speaking to the future Governor of Utah and inspiring his or her next step toward being a great leader excites me! I'm grateful that I get to use my community service initiative to teach boys, girls, men, and women about the power of diversity in leadership.
